Rockstar Games has announced 19 November 2026 as the release date. The game was initially scheduled for 26 May 2026, but that timeline turned out to be too tight. The team is using the extra months to fix bugs, improve performance, and fully optimise GTA 6 for current-generation consoles.

The story in GTA 6 centres on 2 main characters: Lucia and Jason. Together, they roam Vice City as a close-knit team that plans heists and constantly tries to stay one step ahead of the chaos. Lucia is the first female protagonist in a long time. She grew up in tough circumstances, is out on parole, and operates in a focused and calculated way. Jason is her partner in crime: loyal, level-headed, and always on the move. Their dynamic is reminiscent of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, with Lucia usually drawing up the plans and Jason taking on most of the legwork.
Jason dreams of a quiet life, but trouble keeps catching up on him. He grew up among con artists and other criminals and tried to leave his past behind during his time in the army. He eventually ended up in the Keys, where he slipped back into the life and started doing jobs for local drug smugglers. His bond with Lucia gives him direction and perhaps even a way out, although his old life keeps pulling him back in.
Lucia, on the other hand, has had to learn to defend herself, both physically and in the choices she makes. A tough childhood and some time in prison have convinced her that she has to build her own future. She makes conscious choices, thinks ahead, and works step by step towards a better life. Whether that path will be alongside Jason remains to be seen.

Alongside Lucia and Jason, several other characters play key roles in GTA 6. Brian Heder is an older smuggler in the Keys who gives Jason a place to stay. Together with his wife Lori, he runs a boatyard, organises routes and contacts, and lets others handle the dirty work. Cal Hampton, a friend of Jason’s and a regular contact within Brian’s network, tracks the Coast Guard via his scanner, searches online for useful information, and passes it on before the police can react. Boobie Ike is a Vice City entrepreneur with property, a strip club, and a studio. He is a friendly man unless business or money is involved, and he invests together with Dre’Quan Priest in the music label Only Raw Records, because one hit can change everything.
The latter is a former hustler who has grown into a music boss. Dre’Quan Priest signed the duo Real Dimez to Only Raw Records and is trying to break through for real via Vice City. Real Dimez, made up of Bae-Luxe and Roxy, is a rap duo with a strong online presence. After their first local success, they are working on a new track within Only Raw Records to build on that momentum. Raul Bautista also plays a major role: a seasoned bank robber who puts his own teams together and goes for high-stakes jobs. For Lucia and Jason, he can become both a mentor and an employer.
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, Rockstar’s own take on Florida. At the heart of this world is Vice City, surrounded by swamps, islands, coastal towns, and a vast inland area. The map is large, varied, and clearly designed for long drives, boat trips, and quick getaways through both city and countryside.
Within this world are several regions: Vice City itself, a city full of neon, beaches, skyscrapers, and districts ranging from luxury penthouses to rougher neighbourhoods. Then there are the Leonida Keys, a chain of islands with bridges, marinas, and smuggling routes that are ideal for speedboats and night-time drives. Grassrivers consists of swamps and small towns where you’ll encounter airboats, alligators, and remote roads. Port Gellhorn is the industrial port area full of docks, containers, and shipyards, perfect for waterside deals or undercover transport. Ambrosia, meanwhile, is a coastal town with resorts and shopping streets, but also places where business can be handled discreetly. And in Mount Kalaga you’ll find the mountainous inland region with winding roads, viewpoints, and remote hideouts.
GTA 6 will initially be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has not yet been officially announced, although it’s expected to follow at a later date. There are also rumours that the game may eventually come to the Nintendo Switch 2, as Rockstar Games reportedly wants to support that console, but this has not been confirmed.
